A forward-deployed agent is an autonomous agent embedded in a customer's environment to perform implementation and operations work — migration, configuration, integration, day-two operations — under the same governance as production: declared policy, approval gates, budgets, and an append-only record.
The lineage
The term descends from the forward-deployed engineer — the delivery model that put engineers inside customer organizations until the software fit. It worked, and it set the industry's cost floor: the last mile priced in headcount. Forward-deployed agents keep the posture and change the economics — the unit of delivery is software, so the marginal cost of the next deployment approaches zero.
What distinguishes it
Embedded, not remote. The agent operates inside the customer's environment, on their data, with scoped credentials.
Governed, not unattended. Consequential changes are rehearsed in isolation and held for human sign-off with results attached. Cutover is a decision; everything before it is preparation.
Persistent, not project-based. The engagement does not end at launch. The embedded fleet remains for reconciliation, monitoring, and routine operations — continuously, on the record.
